Candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones in the name of St Valentine in many countries. Love and affection are expressed to romantic partners and family members in many ways.
It is believed that during the third century in Rome, Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men, contending that single men made better soldiers. Valentine, who was a Roman priest, defied the king and continued to perform marriages for young lovers secretly. When it was discovered, Claudius sentenced the priest to death. Because of this legend, Saint Valentine became known as the patron saint of love.
Some people believe that the Christian church may have decided to place St Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to Christianise the fifth-century pagan celebration of a fertility festival, Lupercalia, which was celebrated at the Ides of February and dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture.
During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that mid-February was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that February 14 should be a day for romance, love, and friendship. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer was the first to record St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romantic celebration in one of his tales called ‘Parliament of Foules’, writing: Birds gather there on Valentine’s Day to choose their mates. For this was on Seynt Valentynes day,Whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make, (309 and 310 lines)

For fear of being watched, I stole a glance;
Then again, and coveted one more chance.
Their accusing eyes were fixed on my face,
I pretended not to notice, staring into space.
Drink up my bottle of beauty, I did yearn,
My pain was profound, I suffered unseen.
Happy Valentine’s Day, the food and wine for my famished eyes!
Love and Life would be of no worth,
Empty of beauty had been the earth,
In absence of you. Be my Valentine
This amorous, ardent love day divine!
Since childhood, you have been my companion constant;
Time has aged you and me, but not our hearts adolescent.
Warm hugs and blessings to my darling on Valentine’s Day.
I did not see a reason for my being in this world;
Meaningless seemed all - man, animal and bird.
I caught sight of a figure, though it vanished soon.
My bleak eyes brightened, seeing the full moon.
Now I knew it was only on this earth that we can
Enjoy the amazing view of a lovely young woman.
May this love day be as wonderful as you are!
Happy Valentine’s Day to the angel of romance!
