जैसे पहाड़ों जंगलों में वनस्पतियां स्वतः उगती व् विकसित होती हैं उसी तरह जन सामान्य की सामजिक पृष्ठभूमि पर लोक साहित्य उतपन्न होता है । हमारे लोक साहित्य, संस्कारों और आचारों-व्यवहारों में निरंतर प्रकृति और मानवीय चेतना की अभिव्यक्त होती रही है। लोक स्वयं ही प्रकृति का पर्याय है। मोटे तौर पर हम लोक साहित्य को कथा, गीत, कहावतों के रूपों में प्राप्त करते हैं । डॉ. कृष्णदेव उपाध्याय ने लोक साहित्य को चार रूपों में बांटा है : गीत, लोकगाथा, लोककथा तथा प्रकीर्ण साहित्य जिसमें अवशिष्ट समस्त लोकाभिव्यक्ति का समावेश कर लिया गया है । देवी देवताओं की पूजा के लिए रचित गीत तथा दादी दादा की कहानी व् मन्त्र लोकसाहित्य के अंग हैं । धरती, आकाश, कुँआ, तालाब, नदी, नाला, डीह, मरी मसान, वृक्ष, फसल, पौधा, पशु, दैत्य, दानव, देवी, देवता, ब्रह्म एवं तीर्थ आदि पर जो मंत्र या गीत प्रचलित हैं वे इसी के अंतर्गत आते हैं । जन्म से लेकर मरण तक के सभी संस्कार तथा खेती बारी, फसल की पूजा, गृहनिर्माण, कूपनिर्माण, मंदिर एवं धर्मशाला का निर्माण के लिए जिन गीतों अथवा मंत्रों का प्रयोग होता है वे सब इस साहित्य में आते हैं। रो
