Raksha Bandhan 2026

 



Rakshabandhan is celebrated on Shravana Poornima, the full moon day in the Lunar month of Shravan, which typically occurs in July or August on Gregorian calendar. On this day, sisters tie an amulet called rakhi around the wrists of their brothers as a symbol of the bond of protection and obligation. Sanatan culture defines every relationship as a divine bond between members of a family, which ultimately generates a sense of having natural obligations to each other and makes the family live comfortably. A father loves his son and daughter and brings them up, so does a mother; but the relationship between a brother and his sister is such that involves deep feelings and self-sacrificing attributes. A sister cares for her brother and a brother can do anything to protect his sister. This festival is also known as Shravani in Uttarakhand and in Maharashtra as Nariyal Poornima. South Indian Brahmins call it Avani Avittam. This day is very important for Brahmins as they perform Upakram – i.e. they bath in a holy river, change yagyopaveet (sacred thread), distribute the threads among their patrons and start studying Vedas on this divine day.

We celebrate the bond of love and protection on Raksha Bandhan, a festival of deep emotions of love and care which siblings express. Sisters tie a sacred string around the wrist of their brothers to ensure that they be safe from all harms. They also perform Arti and apply a Tilak on their brothers’ forehead praying that God shower them with His blessings. Brothers give their sisters a Raksha Bandhan gift, and since they think the world of their sisters, they are naturally responsible for watching and protecting their sisters. If every young man is a brother and every young woman a sister, except for the one who is married to them, there would be no problem.
